Introduction

Our God is well known for His wonderful acts of mercy.

He is a promise-keeping God.
He is faithful in answering the prayers of His people.
As a loving Father, He cares for His children by providing for their needs.

However, there are moments when God may choose not to answer our prayers in the way we expect.

Sometimes He acts differently from our expectations.
At times He does exceedingly above what we ask.
At other times, He chooses to do less than what we desire.

These moments are not a sign that God has abandoned us. Instead, they become opportunities for Him to teach us deeper spiritual truths.

Why Does God Choose Not to Save?

God may choose not to save or intervene immediately in order to teach us important lessons.

A. God Saves on the Basis of Mercy, Not Merit

When we speak of merit, we refer to:

Human works
Human effort
Human ability to earn God’s approval
Human determination

Merit is based on qualification.

When we speak of mercy, we refer to:

Undeserved compassion
Undeserved kindness

God’s salvation and intervention are based on His mercy, not our performance.

B. God Is Not Compelled to Save

God is sovereign.

He is not obligated to act according to our expectations or timetable. He acts according to His perfect wisdom and will.

C. God’s Love Is Not Measured by Human Achievements

God’s love is not determined by:

Our success
Our accomplishments
Our achievements

His mercy is His sovereign decision to show compassion to those who do not deserve it.

D. To Prevent Us from Becoming Too Familiar with Him

Familiarity breeds contempt.
When God becomes too common in our eyes, we may fail to appreciate His presence and His works.

Sometimes God allows delays so that our reverence for Him remains alive.

What Should We Do When God Chooses Not to Save Immediately?

1. Keep Trusting Him

(Job 13:15; Daniel 3:17–18)

Faith continues even when answers delay.

Like Job and the three Hebrew men, we should trust God regardless of the outcome.

2. Keep Persisting

Case Study: The Canaanite Woman

Persistent faith eventually receives God’s attention.

Never stop praying because the answer has delayed.

3. Continue Being Faithful

(Proverbs 3:27–28)

Joseph remained faithful even when forgotten.

Faithfulness should not depend on immediate rewards.

4. Continue Waiting Upon the Lord

Waiting is not wasting time.

God’s timing is always perfect, even when it seems delayed.

5. Hold On to the Grace of God

(2 Timothy 2:1; Hebrews 4:16)

Grace gives us the strength to continue when circumstances become difficult.

Forms of Grace

Saving Grace
- Grace that brings salvation.
Serving Grace
- Grace that enables us to serve God faithfully.
Sustaining Grace
- Grace that keeps us standing during life’s difficulties.

What Happens When the Grace of God Comes?

A. It Provides Peace of Mind

(John 14:27; John 16:33)

God’s grace gives peace even when circumstances remain unchanged.

B. It Brings Contentment

(Philippians 4:10–13)

Grace teaches us to be content in every season.

C. It Sustains Us

Grace strengthens us to continue when our own strength has failed.

The Purpose of Sustaining Grace

Sustaining grace enables us to remain steadfast:

1. During Temptation and Trials

It keeps us standing when life becomes difficult.

2. During Weariness

It gives strength when we are physically, emotionally, or spiritually exhausted.

3. During Times of Trouble

It enables us to endure hardship without losing faith.

Conclusion

There are moments when God may not answer our prayers in the way we expect. However, His silence is never the absence of His love.

When God chooses not to save immediately:

Trust Him.
Persist in prayer.
Remain faithful.
Wait patiently.
Depend on His grace.

God’s grace is sufficient for every situation, and His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
