Introduction
God is deeply concerned with His glory.
(Isaiah 42:8)
Everything He does in our lives ultimately points back to His glory, and one of the ways we honor Him is through gratitude.
What is Thanksgiving?
- Thanksgiving is the act of giving thanks—a grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors received, especially from God.
- It is expressing gratitude by recognizing and appreciating what God has done in our lives.
The Purpose of Thanking God
There are three major reasons why we should thank God:
1. Acknowledgement Purposes
- Lack of acknowledgement denies God the credit He deserves.
- It can hide or overlook God’s hand in our lives.
We Acknowledge God For:
- His goodness and love
(1 Chronicles 16:34; Nahum 1:7) - His faithfulness
(Psalm 100:1–5) - His grace and mercy
(Psalm 145:8–9)
2. Appreciation Purposes
- Appreciation means recognizing and valuing what God has done.
(Psalm 103:1–6)
God:
- Forgives our sins
- Heals our diseases
- Redeems us from destruction
- Crowns us with love and compassion
- Satisfies our desires
- Gives righteousness and justice
3. Advancement Purposes
- Acknowledging and appreciating God leads to advancement.
(Psalm 50:23; Psalm 51:1) - Gratitude opens doors for greater blessings.
Understanding the Goodness of God
- God is good even when we do not see it.
- After everything, He remains good.
- Whether prayers are answered or not, His nature does not change.
- God does not become good because of what He does—He is inherently good.
- It is possible to doubt God’s goodness during difficult times, but:
- His goodness is immeasurable
- It cannot be measured by human achievements
We receive many blessings we do not deserve.
No matter your situation, you can always count your blessings—past, present, and future.
Hindrances to Gratitude
1. Unsatisfactory Results
(Habakkuk 3:17–19)
- When things do not go as expected, gratitude becomes difficult.
2. Counterattacks After Success
(Exodus 16:1–3)
- After victories, challenges may arise.
- These attacks aim to:
- Undermine God’s work
- Steal His glory
Our Response Should Be:
(1 Thessalonians 5:18; Psalm 34:1)
- Give thanks in all circumstances.
3. Unclear or Unrecognized Blessings
- Not all blessings are obvious.
- Some come in hidden or unexpected forms.
How to Thank God
- We should thank God through:
- Words
- Actions (deeds)
(Psalm 116:12–14)
Gratitude should not only be spoken—it should be lived.
Conclusion
Gratitude is powerful and essential in the life of a believer.
- It gives God glory
- It acknowledges His works
- It leads to advancement
No matter your situation, choose to be thankful—because gratitude unlocks greater dimensions of God’s blessings.
