THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS

Introduction

Forgiveness is one of the most powerful expressions of God’s grace. It brings freedom, restoration, and peace to the believer.

Three Biblical Descriptions of Sin

1. Transgression

  • (Psalm 32:1)
  • Transgression means breaking the law of the Lord
  • It is deliberate disobedience against God’s command

👉 Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven

2. Sin

  • In the Old Testament, sin was covered through the sacrifice of animals
  • In the New Testament, sin is purged through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ

👉 Through Christ, our sins are completely removed, not just covered

3. Iniquity

  • Iniquity refers to the inner corruption or guilt of wrongdoing
  • It is the moral guilt that deserves punishment

👉 Jesus took away the punishment by dying on the cross

How God Deals With Sin When We Confess

1. God forgives our sins

  • (Psalm 85:2, Psalm 86:5)

Forgiveness reveals:

  • The nature of man (sinful and dependent)
  • The nature of God (merciful and gracious)
  • (Psalm 130:4)

2. God covers our sins

The covering of sin serves three purposes:

  1. To remove God’s wrath from His people
    • (Numbers 16:46–48)
  2. To make forgiveness possible
  3. To allow God to dwell among His people
    • (Exodus 25:8)

3. God does not impute iniquity

  • (Romans 4:6–8)
  • God does not count our sins against us when we are forgiven

Requirement for Forgiveness

  • We must be genuine, sincere, and truthful before God
  • Confession must come from a heart of repentance

Conclusion

The power of forgiveness lies in God’s ability to completely remove sin, restore relationship, and grant peace. Through Christ, believers are forgiven, covered, and made righteous before God.

👉 Therefore, we are called to walk in honesty, repentance, and faith in God’s mercy.
