Introduction
Evangelism is the core mission of the Church of Jesus Christ.
The Church exists for two primary purposes:
- To Evangelize – reaching the lost with the Gospel.
- To Edify – building up and strengthening believers in their faith.
Evangelism is not the responsibility of a few people; it is both a corporate responsibility of the church and an individual responsibility of every believer.
What is Evangelism?
Evangelism is the act of sharing the Good News (Gospel) of Jesus Christ so that people may:
- Believe in Him.
- Repent of their sins.
- Receive salvation.
Its ultimate goal is to bring people into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Why Should We Evangelize?
1. To Fulfill Christ’s Command
(Matthew 28:19)
Jesus commissioned every believer to go into the world and make disciples of all nations.
2. To Win Souls for Christ
Every soul is precious before God.
Evangelism is God’s appointed means of bringing lost people into His Kingdom.
3. To Make Disciples
Evangelism does not end with conversion.
Believers are called to nurture new converts so they grow into mature followers of Christ.
4. To Glorify God
(John 15:8)
When people come to Christ and bear spiritual fruit, God is glorified.
5. To Secure Eternal Reward
(Daniel 12:2–3)
Those who lead others to righteousness will receive an eternal reward from God.
The True Purpose of Evangelism
Evangelism is more than simply talking about Jesus.
It is partnering with God to:
- Save souls.
- Make disciples.
- Expand His Kingdom.
Major Aspects of Evangelism
1. Evangelism Involves Sharing
(Acts 4:18–20)
We are called to share Christ with others by:
- Sharing the Gospel.
- Sharing our knowledge of Christ.
- Sharing our personal testimony.
- Sharing God’s love with people.
Our lives should also testify of Christ through our words and actions.
2. Evangelism Involves Compassion (Social Ministry)
(Matthew 9:35–38)
Effective evangelism is motivated by genuine love for people.
It includes:
- Caring for others.
- Showing compassion.
- Being concerned about people’s physical and spiritual needs.
Jesus ministered to both the spiritual and practical needs of those He encountered.
3. Evangelism Leads to Salvation
(John 3:16–18)
The central message of evangelism is salvation through Jesus Christ.
Through faith in Him:
- Sins are forgiven.
- Eternal life is received.
- People are reconciled to God.
4. Evangelism Requires Sacrifice
(Matthew 4:18–19; Mark 3:13–14)
Following Christ’s call to evangelize requires sacrifice.
It may involve:
- Giving our time.
- Leaving our comfort zones.
- Serving others.
- Making personal commitments for the sake of God’s Kingdom.
The first disciples left everything to follow Jesus and participate in His mission.
